Over the past 17 years of teaching our wonderful game, I have heard the words “keep your head down” probably 100’s of times. The problem with this tip is that when you keep your head down you stop your body from tilting, extending, turning and rotating.
Keeping your head down will also cause you to extend the club too early in their downswing making the divot behind the ball. This leads to fat shots, thin shots and every other nasty ball flight. Loss of power and a slice are also a result. Sometimes golfers just experience this issue because of a faulty idea about the golf swing.
Here is a drill I use a lot with my students at Deer Creek Golf Club in Deerfield Beach, FL. And its one I highly recommend to golfers all over the world.
The Line in the Sand drill is an awesome way to improve your ball striking immediately. Playing in the sand this way will get your weight to shift to your front foot, impact and post impact will improve, and most importantly you will hit laser iron shots. You will also compress the ball on the club face. Compression leads to more ball speed and more ball speed will lead to more distance. More distance will lead to lower scores because you will be more accurate.
You might also experience very solid contact along with a new sound coming off the club face! When you are working on this golf swing drill in the sand you will start to feel different movements with your body. Picture a power hitter in baseball. They watch the pitcher release the ball and then react to the pitch. The hitter does not stand still and just swing their arms.
Watch the video below to learn how to immediately improve your ball striking the next time you are at the golf course!
The drill is very simple and only takes a practice bunker to complete. You are almost better swinging this way 100 times in the sand than hitting any golf balls. I have seen my students practice drastically improve their golf games using this simple drill.
The best part of this golf swing drill is you can spend all day beating up the sand and the greens superintendent will not say a word. When finished just rake the bunker!
